About Wood Pellets and Pellet Heat
| Pellet fuel is made mainly of sawdust, shavings and fines leftover after processing trees for lumber and other wood products. At a pellet mill the material is dried, compressed, and formed into small eraser-sized bits They are clean, pleasant smelling and smooth to touch. The pellets are put into bags that weigh 20-40 pounds. Retailers often sell many bags together weighing a ton. Currently, pellet fuel can be purchased at stores that sell building supplies, pet and farm supplies, and hearth appliances. As pellets continue to increase as a popular fuel of choice, they will be sold by many more types of retailers. | ![]() |
Pellet mills voluntarily follow standards to create a product that is consistent in content, density, size, and quality. There are two grades of pellet fuel currently available on the market: standard and premium grades. The main difference between the two is that the standard grade contains more inorganic ash than the premium grade. USA Pellet Fuel Manufacturers produce the highest grade of fuel in North America - all of it is classified as premium grade. Pellet manufacturers are encouraged to label their fuel and to have it tested on a regular basis to ensure the protection of consumers.
The burning process is highly combustible and produces little residue. Some countries have exempted pellet appliances from the smoke emission testing requirements.
There are many advantages in using pellets as the fuel of choice. No trees are cut to make the pellets - they are only made from leftover wood residue. Burning pellet fuel actually helps reduce waste created by lumber production or furniture manufacturing. There are no additives put into the pellets to make them burn longer or more efficiently. Pellet fuel does not smoke or give off any harmful fumes. Using this fuel reduces the need for fossil fuels which are known to be harmful for the environment.
A trip to the local supplier is all that is required when low on fuel. Often, home delivery may be arranged. There is much less work involved than for wood burning heaters: no chopping or making large areas available for stacking. A pellet appliance is capable of generating 10,000-500,000 BTU of heat. An entire house can be heated by pellet fuel when the proper appliance is installed.
The cost of pellet fuel may depend on the geographic region where it is sold, and the current season. It costs about the same as cord wood and less than some other fuels. Pellet fuel is estimated to be only about one-third the cost of electricity. That could mean a large savings over the years.
Whether you live in a
condominium in the city or a home in the country, pellet fuel is among the
safest, healthiest way to heat. This technology is also valuable for
non-residential buildings such as hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail stores,
offices, hospitals, and schools.
Over 500,000 homes in North America now
enjoy the convenience, warmth and clean heat of a pellet stove.
Pellet fuel not only reduces dependence on finite supplies of fossil fuels like oil and gas, it is are carbon neutral. That means when you use pellet heat, you are not contributing to greenhouse gas which causes global warming.
By using Pellet fuel you decrease the dependence on finite supplies of fossil fuels like oil and gas.
Pellet fuel has been proven to provide the cleanest burn or any solid fuel.
Pellet appliances may be installed with zero or minimum clearance.
Allergy free, no dust and debris that can contaminate the air.
Easy to handle, even if living alone.
Convenient, clean bags are compact enough to store an entire season of fuel, about one third the space of cord wood.
Pellet fuel is a renewable resource.
There will always be a need for wood products so there will always be the materials needed to make pellet fuel.
Nothing is taken from the environment to produce pellets.
The cost of disposing of unwanted material left after processing wood is greatly reduced.
Nothing compares to the warmth, comfort and romance of a natural fire.
Automatic feed systems mean you only have to fill the hopper every few days.
Pellet
fuel is not subject to world price variations like imported oil.

A Natural fire ... nature's comfort.
The warmth and romance of the hearth has been a tradition in many homes for generations.
New Technology - Clean and Convenient
Technological advances are making natural warmth easier, more convenient and cleaner to enjoy. No mess, no bark on the carpet. Pellet fuel costs about the same price as cordwood without the work!
New designs are revolutionizing the industry. New color ranges fit in with any decor. Large windows on most models extend into full, wrap around glass.
Pleasant to Smell ... Smooth to Touch
Pellet fuel is made mainly of wood residues which are left over from furniture manufacturing and sawdust from lumber production. Wood waste that was once burnt in a bee-hive burner is now put to good use. The material is taken to a pellet mill where it is dried, compressed, and formed into small pellet-sized bits that are about the same size in diameter as an eraser at the end of a pencil. Premium wood pellets are a natural golden woody color, clean, pleasant smelling and smooth to touch.
Energy Efficient and Warm
The burning process is highly combustible and produces little residue. Combustion efficiencies of new free standing appliances range from 78-85% and they will furnish between 5,000-60,000 BTU per hour.
Pellet furnaces range from 60,000-500,000 BTU per hour.
No emissions means cleaner air for all of us!
Pellet fuel burns cleanly with little or no emissions. It generates heat that is both efficient and co-operative with our effort in restoring environmental quality.
Pellet appliances are exempt from EPA smoke emission testing requirements. The particulate level is extremely low because the moisture has been extracted, and the feed mechanism is regulated to ensure the correct fuel to air ratio.
Advanced technology combined with premium quality fuel from British Columbia, Canada gives you the most heat with the cleanest burn.
Renewable Fuels - Alternative Energy
By choosing pelleted fuel, a natural bioenergy heating option made from renewable sources, you can feel good about your choice over and over again
